Hi all, I'm single, late 40s, and You can expect to pay around $1,000 for rent here. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Is this normal for South Bend?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely decent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Old Town) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Background: I'm a project manager, 40, moved here 9 years ago from Houston. I've lived in North and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The healthcare situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:

- Active local events and festivals
- The safety scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Road conditions need improvement

I'm a chef who relocated here from Seattle about 1 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've lived in The Heights for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
