Affordable areas near South Charleston?

Longtime lurker here, Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $131,500 on average. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Thanks in advance! It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Chicago about 2 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are stable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. No regrets on my end..

Came here for family and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The nightlife is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to San Francisco it's improving.

Used to live on the Cedar Grove side, now on the Pine Hills side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Westside. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in construction. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Hope this helps!.
