Is South Gate getting better or worse?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Charlotte about 13 years ago. The main reasons were work and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is excellent.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. No regrets on my end..
