South Gate quality of life -am I missing something?

Been meaning to ask this. Born and raised here. The unemployment rate is 4.5%, which is about average. Household incomes average around $71,315 in South Gate. The median home value here is around $608,500, which is pretty steep. With a population of 91,836, South Gate is a smaller city. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Boring for young people
Any advice would be great. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 8 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Chicago about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are established, gas is average.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 1 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 54, moved here 13 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in North and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The nightlife situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. improving vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt underrated. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in East. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in real estate. If you're in retail you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Denver it's better than expected.
