So, I'm a teacher here and With a population of 68,161, South Hill is a smaller city. The median home value here is around $493,800, which is pretty steep. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.
