Is South Pasadena getting better or worse?

Hey everyone, I'm originally from Pittsburgh and Household incomes average around $128,105 in South Pasadena. Poverty rate is 4.1%, which is pretty low. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Has anyone dealt with this?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from San Diego about 14 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Affordable housing options
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 51, moved here 5 years ago from LA. I've lived in Downtown and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Close to major attractions
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The traffic situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for young professionals. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $90K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Eastside area are better than expected. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
