Been meaning to ask this. I relocated for work and Median household income is $126,063, which feels pretty solid for the area. The median home value here is around $443,900, which is pretty steep. Crime rate is something to consider -South Plainfield sits at 124.4 per 100K. Rent is about $1,928/month for a decent place. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Anyone in a similar situation? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

it depends on the neighborhood

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely average and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Westside) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely underrated and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Old Town) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
