Why I chose South Portland over bigger cities

So, My family moved here when I was a kid. With a population of 26,780, South Portland is a smaller city. Household incomes average around $84,563 in South Portland. The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Low crime in most areas
- Good schools
- Close to nature
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- High property taxes
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Far from major airports
Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The walkability is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..
