Why I chose South Portland over bigger cities
So, My family moved here when I was a kid. With a population of 26,780, South Portland is a smaller city. Household incomes average around $84,563 in South Portland. The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.
Pros:

- Low crime in most areas
- Good schools
- Close to nature
- Good airport connections
Cons:
- Not very walkable
- High property taxes
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Far from major airports
Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.
