Random thought, I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 5.5%, which is about average. You can expect to pay around $1,840 for rent here. Household incomes average around $94,740 in South San Jose Hills. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Worth the trade-offs? Looking forward to hearing from you all. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Lakewood. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in engineering. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Indian.
No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely tough and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (North) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
