Bought a house here in 2015 and I'm still on the fence after all this time. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Minneapolis about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is solid.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely challenging and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Fairview) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, I love the pace of life here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. dating scene used to be much affordable but now it's tough.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's been a really good experience overall.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely average and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Midtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
