So, I grew up here but left for a while. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Pittsburgh it's excellent.

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Eastside area are hit or miss. Kids love it here.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is housing market. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely tough and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Eastside) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
