Rent vs buy in Springfield -what makes sense?

First post here. Crime rate is something to consider -Springfield sits at 777.2 per 100K. Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. Rent is about $945/month for a decent place. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Low taxes
- Strong sense of community
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Cold winters
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Homelessness issues downtown
It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Meadowbrook. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in tech. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Seattle it's tough.

Came here for work and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The community vibe is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The food scene here is pretty good. Tons of great farm-to-table places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Atlanta about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is improving.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. No regrets on my end..

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2021 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Downtown area are challenging. Kids love it here.
