The good and bad of living in Springfield

Hey everyone, I'm a teacher here and The median home value here is around $155,200, which is actually reasonable. Rent is about $945/month for a decent place. With a population of 114K, Springfield is a mid-size city. Crime rate is something to consider -Springfield sits at 777.2 per 100K. Poverty rate is 11.2%, which is around average. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas
- Active local events

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Cold winters
- Chain restaurants dominate
Thanks in advance! People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Sunset. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in education. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've lived in Springfield for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong job market in several industries
- The traffic scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2019 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
