Curious what people think. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Median household income is $51,339, which feels on the lower side for the area. With a population of 155K, Springfield is a mid-size city. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Thoughts? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Baltimore about 4 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are stable, gas is average.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Highland for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- The outdoor recreation scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Rising rent and home prices
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..

I'm a teacher and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is underrated and there's always something going on.
