Springfield housing prices — when will it stop?

Hello, We're a young couple and With a population of 155K, Springfield is a mid-size city. Poverty rate is 19.0%, which is higher than I expected. Crime rate is something to consider — Springfield sits at 905.3 per 100K. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Nice parks and trails
- Plenty of shopping options
- Active local events

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Cold winters
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homelessness issues downtown
Is this normal for Springfield? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Minneapolis it's solid.

I've lived in Lakewood for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- The housing market scene is improving

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is cost of living. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 9 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been here 3 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is better than expected.

No regrets on my end..

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Lakewood. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely pretty good and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Greenfield for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong job market in several industries
- The outdoor recreation scene is solid

The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for remote workers. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely solid and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Westside) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
