From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Definitely worth checking out..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if public transit matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Charlotte about 8 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong job market in several industries
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is solid.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 2 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into running, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Westside area are underrated. Kids love it here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Midtown. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for retirement and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The housing market is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Used to live on the Pine Hills side, now on the East side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 52, moved here 9 years ago from New York. I've lived in Riverside and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Austin it's tough.

Weather-wise, the summers are solid and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (The Heights) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Denver, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 10 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
