St. Charles is underrated, change my mind

I'm a college student here and Average temperature is around 56--F, so the weather is moderate. Rent is about $1,186/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $280,800, which seems about average. Crime rate is something to consider -St. Charles sits at 183.9 per 100K. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. What would you do? Thanks! It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Highland for 15 years. Moved from Seattle for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Can feel isolated. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 5/10. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.
