We have two kids and Homes are going for about $370,800 on average. The median home value here is around $370,800, which seems about average. With a population of 21,639, St. John is a small town. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. Looking forward to hearing from you all. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Denver about 11 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good airport with direct flights
- Diverse dining options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in The Heights for 13 years. Moved from Denver for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Winters are long and cold. And walkability can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 6/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
