Carson L. housing

First time home buyer in St. Joseph

Household incomes average around $55,578 in St. Joseph. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. TIA! The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 6 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I'm a nurse and I've found it exceeded my expectations. The community is better than expected and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Atlanta about 2 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are manageable, gas is solid.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I work in consulting here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is pretty good. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Riverside. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Came here for school and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The housing market is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.
