Hello, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Rent is about $968/month for a decent place. The city has invested a lot in new development. Would love some local perspective. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The outdoor recreation scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Lakewood. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in retail. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like seafood.
