Best and worst neighborhoods in Sterling Heights

Been living here since 2007. Poverty rate is 8.2%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 51°F, so expect cold winters. Median household income is $78,429, which feels about average for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Lots of new development

Cons:
- Sprawl everywhere
- Boring for young people
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Chain restaurants dominate
What would you do? The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

We moved here with our family and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Schools in West area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from New York about 10 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is challenging.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
