What surprised you most about Stockton?

So, Military spouse here. Median household income is $76,851, which feels about average for the area. With a population of 320K, Stockton is a mid-size city. Household incomes average around $76,851 in Stockton. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Should I be concerned? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 43, moved here 15 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in South and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The school system situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $60K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
