Best and worst neighborhoods in Storrs

Hey everyone, I'm a college student here and The unemployment rate is 6.7%, which is concerning. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. What do you all think? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

The food scene here is average. Tons of great Vietnamese places. I love the pace of life here.

Bought a house here in 2019 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Fairview. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 10 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 50, moved here 8 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in Westside and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The dating scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. average vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for work and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The food scene is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
