Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Seattle about 15 years ago. The main reasons were weather and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a electrician, 57, moved here 2 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Downtown and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The pet-friendliness situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Downtown: Great for remote workers. average vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in consulting. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

I've lived in South for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- The outdoor recreation scene is average
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.
