Biggest downsides of living in Summerville?

Curious what people think. Household incomes average around $78,621 in Summerville. Homes are going for about $295,700 on average. With a population of 51,262, Summerville is a smaller city. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Would love some local perspective. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Sunset) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Nashville about 7 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are competitive, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..
