Is Sumter a good place to live?

So, Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $188,400 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Sumter sits at 1,057.0 per 100K. The median home value here is around $188,400, which is actually reasonable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 15 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in East. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Austin about 12 years ago. The main reasons were work and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong job market in several industries
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is average.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Happy to answer more specific questions..
