Pros and cons of Sumter after 10 years

Curious what people think. With a population of 43,065, Sumter is a smaller city. It's a a smaller city city with about 43,065 people. Median household income is $53,071, which feels on the lower side for the area. The median home value here is around $188,400, which is actually reasonable. Homes are going for about $188,400 on average. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Diverse community
- Lots of new development

Cons:
- Rising rent prices
- Not very walkable
- Boring for young people
- Homelessness issues downtown
Would love some local perspective. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 11 years. Moved from Atlanta for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is decent - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Can feel isolated. And housing market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 9/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.
