Hey folks, Poverty rate is 8.3%, which is pretty low. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The weather takes some getting used to. What are your go-to spots? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from LA about 14 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Lots of new development happening
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

The food scene here is challenging. Tons of great Italian places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 13 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The nightlife is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Riverside) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The housing market is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 52, moved here 9 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Oak Park and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cultural scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Portland it's average.
