Living in Surprise — the reality

Hey folks, Born and raised here. Median household income is $93,371, which feels pretty solid for the area. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Does this match your experience? I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

The food scene here is average. Tons of great Korean places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 15 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Internet is pretty good in most areas.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Downtown. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Seattle about 7 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are reasonable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Sunset for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- The community vibe scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for singles. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've been here 5 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The dating scene is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is pet-friendliness. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a data analyst, 50, moved here 4 years ago from Boston. I've lived in South and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The job market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Boston, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
