Raising a family in Sussex -thoughts?

I'm a 31-year-old data analyst and Crime rate is something to consider -Sussex sits at 22.2 per 100K. Poverty rate is 5.1%, which is pretty low. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much competitive but now it's tough.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want dating scene, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I'm a sales manager and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is decent and there's always something going on.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 11 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Came here for family and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The traffic is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from San Francisco about 3 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely excellent and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (West) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
