Best and worst neighborhoods in Syracuse

Hey, I'm single, late 50s, and The unemployment rate is 4.2%, which is about average. Rent is about $998/month for a decent place. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Let me know your thoughts. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The housing market is honestly tough and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. it exceeded my expectations. Worth doing your research before committing.

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much growing but now it's challenging.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 32, moved here 8 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Eastside and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The walkability situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
