From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in Riverside area are solid. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 7 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
