Considering Syracuse vs Houston -help me decide

Hi all, My family moved here when I was a kid. It's a a smaller city city with about 34,009 people. Household incomes average around $132,459 in Syracuse. The unemployment rate is 0.8%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $2,006 for rent here. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. Worth the trade-offs? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from LA about 1 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is solid.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 36, moved here 7 years ago from New York. I've lived in Sunset and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The nightlife situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for young professionals. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $70K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in Westside area are challenging. Kids love it here.
