Rent vs buy in Syracuse -what makes sense?

Hey folks, I've been here for 16 years and The median home value here is around $531,600, which is pretty steep. Household incomes average around $132,459 in Syracuse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Does this match your experience? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Midtown. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in tech. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally pretty good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Definitely worth checking out..

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much affordable but now it's better than expected.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's not perfect but it works for me. Compared to Seattle it's challenging.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 55, moved here 11 years ago from Denver. I've lived in South and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The nightlife situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I work in real estate here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is surprisingly good. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'm a lawyer and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. The community is hit or miss and there's always something going on.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I'd watch out for is cost of living. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Midtown side. Completely different vibe. it's been a really good experience overall.
