Unpopular opinion about Syracuse

Just moved here 7 months ago and Crime rate is something to consider -Syracuse sits at 80.1 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 0.8%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a real estate agent, 48, moved here 5 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Sunset and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Active local events and festivals
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Road conditions need improvement
3. The cultural scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for families. average vibes, walkable.
- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Happy to answer more specific questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 12 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor recreation is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The school system situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Uptown. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like seafood.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..
