What surprised you most about Tacoma?

Random thought, The median home value here is around $454,600, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $454,600 on average. It's a a mid-size city city with about 220K people. Average temperature is around 52°F, so expect cold winters. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Great weather
- Close to nature
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Rising rent prices
- Limited nightlife
- Not very walkable
- Mosquitoes and humidity
Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I have mixed feelings honestly. Internet is average in most areas.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Springfield. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Indian.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Tampa and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Oak Park. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 10 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely improving and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Eastside) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Minneapolis about 2 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Definitely worth checking out..
