Random thought, Rent is about $765/month for a decent place.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 2 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Portland it's pretty good.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is solid in most areas.

Used to live on the Uptown side, now on the Eastside side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.

I've lived in Downtown for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- The job market scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for couples. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in South for 7 years. Moved from Raleigh for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. healthcare is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is decent - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Bugs and humidity in summer. And cultural scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 9/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- The community vibe scene is excellent
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Definitely worth checking out..
