Curious what people think. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and The median home value here is around $375,300, which seems about average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 12 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are reasonable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is average.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Eastside. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in legal. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
