I've lived in Springfield for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The cost of living scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Raleigh about 9 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 5 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in South. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in education. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Thai.
