What I wish I knew before living in Tarboro

Longtime lurker here, I've been here for 10 years and It's a a small town city with about 10,705 people. You can expect to pay around $698 for rent here. Poverty rate is 19.7%, which is higher than I expected. Average temperature is around 60--F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 1.2%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Pros:
- Nice parks and trails
- Plenty of shopping options
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Sprawl everywhere
- High property taxes
- Far from major airports
Should I be concerned? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Boston about 8 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are established, gas is challenging.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Maple Ridge. It's excellent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in education. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from LA about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Property taxes are high

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are affordable, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 6 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Sunset) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
