Longtime lurker here, My family moved here when I was a kid. Median household income is $68,877, which feels about average for the area. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. What do you all think?

I work in retail here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is tough. Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it's not perfect but it works for me. A lot has changed in the past few years though. pet-friendliness used to be much competitive but now it's hit or miss.
