Why I chose Taylorville over bigger cities

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a nurse at the local hospital and It's a a small town city with about 11,149 people. The unemployment rate is 2.9%, which is pretty low. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Midtown) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it exceeded my expectations. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much stable but now it's challenging.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Pine Hills. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in tech. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Definitely worth checking out..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cost of living. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.
