Honest thoughts on life in Terre Haute

Hi all, Rent is about $877/month for a decent place. Median household income is $41,960, which feels on the lower side for the area. Poverty rate is 18.6%, which is higher than I expected. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Growing food scene
- Good schools
- Easy commute
- Strong sense of community

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Lack of diversity
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Homelessness issues downtown
There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Old Town for 2 years. Moved from New York for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is challenging. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. government is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are wild for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is better than expected - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Old Town schools are underrated. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Property taxes are high. Can feel isolated. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Bought a house here in 2019 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.
