Moving to Terre Haute -what should I know?

I'm a teacher here and Household incomes average around $41,960 in Terre Haute. The unemployment rate is 4.2%, which is about average. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Worth the trade-offs? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much affordable but now it's pretty good.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 25, moved here 10 years ago from New York. I've lived in Uptown and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cultural scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for singles. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for weather and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor recreation is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 12 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
