Remote worker thinking about Terre Haute

You can expect to pay around $877 for rent here. Median household income is $41,960, which feels on the lower side for the area. With a population of 58,491, Terre Haute is a smaller city. Rent is about $877/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 18.6%, which is higher than I expected. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Does this match your experience? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a nurse and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is average and there's always something going on.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 15 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in West. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like seafood.

No regrets on my end..

I work in retail here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is decent. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 58, moved here 9 years ago from Houston. I've lived in North and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Good healthcare facilities
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The food scene situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
