The good and bad of living in Terre Haute

So, Crime rate is something to consider -Terre Haute sits at 324.1 per 100K. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. What neighborhoods would you suggest?

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 56, moved here 12 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in Springfield and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The community vibe situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- Eastside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 35, moved here 12 years ago from Denver. I've lived in East and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Property taxes are high
3. The safety situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for young professionals. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $100K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 8 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Dallas about 13 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is solid.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Hope this helps!.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want job market, then yeah this place is great. But if job market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great farm-to-table places. I genuinely enjoy living here.
