I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 18.7%, which is concerning. Crime rate is something to consider -Terrebonne sits at 317.3 per 100K. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 8 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into running, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've been here 13 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is average.

Came here for school and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The traffic is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely tough and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (North) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the The Heights side, now on the Lakewood side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

Used to live on the Oak Park side, now on the North side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

I've lived in Lakewood for about 9 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Affordable housing options
- The walkability scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Happy to answer more specific questions..
