Best hidden gems in Texas City

Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and You can expect to pay around $1,200 for rent here. Homes are going for about $190,600 on average. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Would love some local perspective. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 26, moved here 10 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in East and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The walkability situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for remote workers. decent vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for school and stayed because the quality of life is solid. The traffic is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, Hope this helps!.
