Is The Dalles worth it salary-wise?

My partner and I are You can expect to pay around $956 for rent here. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Am I wrong here?

My experience has been mostly positive. it exceeded my expectations. The only thing I'd watch out for is public transit. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 4 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is underrated.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Boston about 5 years ago. The main reasons were work and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are growing, gas is excellent.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 50, moved here 6 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Oak Park and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Property taxes are high
3. The healthcare situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for couples. solid vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's been a really good experience overall. I know a lot of people disagree but after 11 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Fairview for 1 years. Moved from Seattle for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Fairview schools are challenging. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Property taxes are high. And healthcare can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 6/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.
