OK so Born and raised here. Rent is about $853/month for a decent place. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What do you all think? It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Moved here from Raleigh about 6 years ago. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Still getting used to walkability but It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Raleigh about 3 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are reasonable, gas is underrated.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 10 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in government. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much stable but now it's surprisingly good.
